We are often confused between what we deserve and what we are not supposed to get in life. This raises some issues in our overall attitude towards life that we set some standards for ourselves to solve this confusion.

When we see a decent opportunity on our way, we sometimes get too excited about it. So much that we forget the possibility that we might end up doing better than that but just because this one arrived first we get enticed. Or sometimes we see opportunities in our way but we ignore them thinking that we would go for something better and let’s skip this one for now.

This is a very common scenario nowadays. Every one of us is facing regularly. We fail to recognize what’s right for us and we end up being dissatisfied with wherever we end up or whatever we end up with.

Sometimes when we set high standards for ourselves we get too carried away with our expectations that we set unrealistic standards which we fail to match. Or sometimes we get too restless to be somewhere good that we jump on the first thing we come across and then later on we start feeling that skipping this one might have given us more time and space to land somewhere nicer.

So, the question is how do we resolve this issue? How do we get clarity about setting up the right standards? And how to know when to utilize the restlessness in us to win something big?

This article might help you to get a good answer for this confusion and you might get a lot more clarity on how to achieve the right balance between setting up high standards and being desperate to jump on an opportunity in life.

Setting up the right standards

While we set our beliefs about what we deserve and what’s the point below which we won’t be settling, we need to be honest with ourselves. Nobody knows you better than yourself so what’s the point is tricking yourself into something that you know is hard to be true?

We often tend to overestimate ourselves during the planning and thinking phase of the process and when the time comes for implementation we find drastic differences from what we expected ourselves to be. Make sure you don’t get carried away with your emotions and expectations while thinking of what you deserve. We all want the best for ourselves but we need to understand what our reality is as well.

Never promise yourself that you’ll work hard every day for12–14 hours while you know your working capacity doesn’t go beyond 8 hours. Don’t assure yourself that you’d do phenomenal work in a certain field that you know you struggle in. Don’t just say or do things to get yourself pumped up. Instead, use the planning phase to figure out something best and solid so that you won’t get bored of giving effort every day.

You need to be honest with yourself about how capable you are and how much effort you are planning to put in. How much of your time you would be able to devote to your plan and what are the things that will always be there to bother you in between?

After a proper analysis of all the pros and cons of your lifestyle, you need to plan out a possible goal for yourself that is as high in standards as you like it to be but it’s realistic at the same time so that it could be hard but couldn’t be impossible.

Set up big and realistic goals. Plan out how you will give your best to it and regularly make directional progress and you’ll see yourself getting closer to what you believe you deserve every day.

Using restlessness in the right way

Especially when we are young we get fascinated by the opportunities that come in our way and we feel rushed to try ourselves out on various occasions. The exploring mind is always excited to have an experience of everything that comes up.

Sometimes that even gets to a level that we start testing ourselves at places where we aren’t even supposed to.

Let’s say you are a youngster who’s looking forward to landing at a good place to start a bright career. There comes a point when you see your friends doing fine at various streams that they chose for themselves and they are looking happy. You see them earning money and start getting independent and that somewhere pushes you to think about joining one of them by trying what they did.

Even if you have different goals decided for you but you see them making progress a little before you then you start getting desperate for the instant solution and you start ignoring the fact that you had other ideas in mind that needed to be executed.

Things like these lead to desperate measures at times and make people go all carried away with momentary feelings.

So, this is where you need to be smart. You need to understand that being restless is going to reward you but not when it’s there for the wrong thing. Realize that you are meant to fight but not those fights which aren’t meant for you.

You have to be selective with your battles even if it requires you to be more patient than others at times.

Go all desperate and crazy when your time comes. When the right opportunity that suits you strikes then give your every bit to it and be restless at that time. That’s where you should utilize the restlessness and craze inside you to bring the best out of the opportunity that has come your way.

Key Takeaway

So, the meaning of this article, all I’m saying is that you need to attain the right balance between setting up high standards for yourself and being restless for the opportunities that strike.

Do not set up goals so high that it’s way too difficult to achieve that you give your best yet can’t get anything out of it. Also, just because you see an opportunity in front of you just don’t go all desperate to get it unless you feel that it’s the right thing for you. Spend time thinking and analyzing what’s best for you and deal with it accordingly.

Be restless when the right opportunity for you comes on the table but be smart enough to understand which one is the right one for you and matches your standards and does justice to all the work you’ve done on yourself so far.
